"Fifth Beatle"

Il produttore di Broadway Vivek Tiwary (The Addams Family, American Idiot) ha dichiarato di avere il permesso di utilizzare le canzoni dei Beatles nel suo prossimo film da 25 milioni dollari "The Fifth Beatle" sulla vita di Brian Epstein, il manager dei Fab Four che Paul McCartney aveva soprannominato " il quinto Beatle".
"Ho firmato un contratto con la Sony / ATV, che controllano il catalogo musicale di Lennon McCartney e sono orgoglioso di annunciare che avremo la musica dei Beatles nel nostro film", ha detto Tiwary a The Hollywood Reporter . I Beatles (ovvero i membri della band ancora in vita) non hanno approvato "The Fifth Beatle", ma una fonte dice che i loro rappresentanti hanno firmato il via alla sceneggiatura e hanno dato il permesso di utilizzare i brani musicali.



"La mia ipotesi è che useremo dalle sei alle 10 canzoni dei Beatles," ha detto Tiwary. "Abbiamo il diritto e la capacità di utilizzare i seguenti brani, con l'opzione di scambiarli con altri, se decidiamo di cambiare la lista: "All You Need Is Love," "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away," "A Day in the Life," "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," "Yesterday," "Eleanor Rigby," "Help!" "You Never Give Me Your Money," 'Girl," "A Hard Day's Night," "Strawberry Fields Forever" and "Come Together"."

Jeff Jones , Amministratore Delegato di Apple Corps, la holding dei Beatles, ha detto, "Apple Corps non ha alcun commento da fare sul film tranne che per dire che il film non includerà nessuno degli "original Beatles master recordings". I fan possono ascoltare le versioni di queste registrazioni nello show "Love" dei Cirque du Soleil a Las Vegas, dove McCartney, Yoko Ono, il produttore George Martin, Olivia la vedova di George Harrison e il figlio Dhani si troveranno per il quinto anniversario dello spettacolo l'8 giugno.

Fatta eccezione per il film "Nowhere Boy", dove è presente la prima canzone scritta da di John Lennon "Hello Little Girl", poi accreditata Lennon / McCartney, in nessun altro sui Beatles ( Backbeat, The Hours e Times, Two of us ) ci sono brani Lennon / McCartney.


Epstein, omosessuale proprio negli anni in cui l'omosessualità era illegale nel Regno Unito, soffrì molto il suo essere diverso, anche se era manager della band più famosa del mondo. Morì di overdose di sedativi nel 1967, un mese dopo che l'omosessualità fu legalizzata. "E' sicuramente possibile che "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" sia su Brian," ha detto Tiwary. L'esperto di Beatles Tim Riley ha detto a The Hollywood Reporter "Si è a lungo speculato su questo argomento, ma Lennon non disse mai niente per conquistarlo".


"Brian Epstein era profondamente represso, un ragazzo infelice," ha detto David Browne, il cui nuovo libro, "Fire and Rain", ci racconta i dettagli degli ultimi giorni dei Beatles. "La felicità nel mondo dei Beatles era solo quello che sembrava da fuori e al centro di quel mondo questo ragazzo alle prese con tutti i suoi demoni. La storia è matura per essere raccontata. C'è ancora qualcosa di misterioso in lui".


Tiwary ha parlato con Tom Kitt, compositore di "Next to Normal" , riguardo a un musical teatrale del film "The Fifth Beatle" . C'è anche un progetto per una graphic novel prodotta dalla Dark Horse Entertainment. E Tiwary è alla ricerca di un regista ( si è parlato di Cameron Crowe e Gus Van Sant ). "Mi piacerebbe avviare la produzione quest'anno," ha detto Tiwary. "Non voglio aspettare ancora due anni".


Per chi volesse dare una "sbirciatina" al dialogo del film, eccovi la scena ambientata in Spagna durante la vacanza di Lennon con Epstein nel 1963 (naturalmente in inglese..):

JOHN - Did you think he was attractive, then?


BRIAN - Who?


JOHN  - The matador. That's why you like bullfighting.


BRIAN -  I like bullfighting because it's a beautiful, aggressive sport. At his final moment of triumph, the matador becomes death -- he kills the killing machine. But not before he gives the bull its glory; shows the world its beauty, its power, its majesty. He also gives the aficionados something to believe in, something to admire, and ultimately something to hate. So in the end, he gives people hope.


[Brian turns to face the sea before continuing wistfully.]


BRIAN -  (cont'd) He uplifts the arena, the city, the nation. Very beautiful... So yes, I suppose I do find him attractive, but not in the way you might think.

[A moment, and then John points offscreen.]

JOHN - What about him, then?


BRIAN - No. Too... clumsy.


JOHN - What's that got to do with his looks?


BRIAN - Everything!


JOHN  - Hmmh. Well, him then.

[John points at another.]

BRIAN - Yes, him, very. Classic features. Elegant face.


JOHN - And him? John points at another.


BRIAN - Not so much.


JOHN - You're mad. He's got all the birds!


BRIAN - Women aren't naturally the best arbiters of taste. He's quite ordinary.


JOHN - And that one?

[John points at another.]

BRIAN - No.

JOHN - Well we agree after all.

[John turns to face Brian.]

JOHN - (CONT'D) And how about me? Do you find me attractive?

[In a rare moment of weakness, Brian turns to face John.]
BRIAN - Yes.
[John looks deeply into Brian's eyes and holds his stare for an uncomfortable amount of time.]

JOHN - Well.

[John turns back to face the ocean.]


JOHN - (cont'd) It's too bad I'm not queer.
